The UN SSE initiative and S&P Global Energy advanced their ongoing collaboration on the energy transition during New York Climate Week, convening market participants for two focused discussions on the evolving role of commodity and carbon markets in supporting the transition towards more sustainable and resilient environments and economies.
On the morning of 21 September, members of the UN SSE Expert Group on Commodity Markets and the Energy Transition met at S&P Global Energy offices in New York. The session focused on clean power, storage and flexibility, exploring the role commodity markets can play in supporting the transition to more resilient, low- and zero-emissions energy systems.

The Expert Group, convened by the UN SSE in collaboration with S&P Global Energy, brings together more than 20 stock exchanges alongside regulators and market participants. Through a series of meetings, the group is examining different areas of the energy transition, identifying market-structure challenges and opportunities and sharing practical insights across markets. The work will ultimately contribute to a white paper on commodity markets and the energy transition to be published in the run up to 2027’s COP32 climate summit.
Also on 21 September, the SSE and S&P Global Energy were hosted by CME Group for a Carbon Currents Roundtable, where experts focused on the demand side of carbon markets. Corporate buyers, exchanges, financial institutions and other market participants discussed how organizations are preparing for 2030 carbon-credit requirements, including approaches to procurement and portfolio construction, quality and delivery risk, governance, insurance, pricing and the potential role of exchange-traded instruments.
Together, the discussions reflected the broader scope of the UN SSE — S&P Global Energy collaboration, which is examining a range of interconnected areas including carbon and emissions markets, clean power, energy infrastructure and other commodity markets critical to the energy transition.
The Expert Group will continue to explore these topics through dedicated sub-focus areas, with both virtual and in-person meeting options. Its next in-person meeting is planned for December in Beijing. The focus for this meeting will be Critical Minerals and Battery Metals. The SSE continues to welcome expressions of interest from exchanges, regulators and relevant market participants interested in contributing to the Expert Group.
