Carbon Markets Advisory Group – First meeting

15 Feb, 2023
Online

This is an invitation only event. For more information, please contact the SSE team.

The United Nations Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) Advisory Group on Carbon Markets, launched in November 2022 at COP27, kicked off a new workstream to support exchanges in their efforts to create resilient and sustainable carbon markets and maximize their benefits in the fight against climate change, with its first Advisory Group meeting.

The SSE’s Partner Exchanges and key stakeholders were invited to participate in the “Zero Draft” brainstorming webinar, which took place on Wednesday, 15 February 2023 at 9:00 and 16:00 Geneva time.

The two webinars were substantively identical. SSE meetings are organized twice in one day to accommodate the many time zones of the Advisory Group members.

If you would like to join the SSE Advisory Group on Carbon Markets, please contact us at info@SSEinitiative.org.

Webinar Summary and Presentation

The new workstream examines the contribution exchanges can make toward SDG 13 by supporting impactful carbon markets. The guidance the group will be working on is intended to serve as a useful reference point for exchanges that are exploring options for becoming involved in carbon markets or optimizing involvement that may already be in place.

This project is born out of stakeholder demand, voiced by exchanges that are currently working on establishing markets in their region. It builds on the research presented in the SSE’s Market Monitor on Voluntary Carbon Markets published in November 2022 at COP27 in Sharm-el-Sheik. In addition to exchanges, the SSE invites securities regulators, investors and other members of the SSE network to participate in this workstream.

The SSE team will prepare three drafts in total for consultation with the Advisory Group – Zero Draft, First Draft, and Second Draft. The group will have the chance to provide written feedback on each iteration. The outline and topics discussed in the draft can be found clearly explained in the Webinar Slides available below.

About the SSE

The SSE initiative is a UN Partnership Programme organised by UNCTAD, the UN Global Compact, UNEP FI and the PRI. The SSE’s mission is to provide a global platform for exploring how exchanges, in collaboration with investors, companies (issuers), regulators, policymakers and relevant international organizations, can enhance performance on ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance) issues and encourage sustainable investment, including the financing of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The SSE seeks to achieve this mission through an integrated programme of conducting evidence-based policy analysis, facilitating a network and forum for multi-stakeholder consensus-building, and providing technical assistance and advisory services.
