FIAB-SSE collaboration

The United Nations Sustainable Stock Exchanges initiative (UN SSE) and the Federación Iberoamericana de Bolsas (FIAB) are strengthening their collaboration to expand participation of Latin American stock exchanges in the UN SSE Net Zero Exchange Alliance, supporting the region’s climate leadership and the global transition to a net zero emissions economy.

Through this collaboration, the UN SSE and FIAB are working to equip exchanges across Ibero-America with the knowledge, tools, and peer networks needed to make credible net zero commitments and to support their listed markets in aligning with global climate goals.

“Latin American exchanges are demonstrating real leadership in the global transition to net zero emissions, and we are seeing strong momentum across the region,” said Anthony Miller, Chief Coordinator of the UN SSE. “Our partnership with FIAB has been instrumental in supporting exchanges with practical guidance, peer learning, and regionally accessible tools. We greatly value this collaboration and its impact in helping exchanges turn climate commitments into action across their markets.”

Supporting Exchanges Through Peer Learning and Practical Guidance

The UN SSE Net Zero Exchange Group brings together exchanges committed to aligning their own operations with net zero while also supporting issuers and market participants in the transition to a low-carbon economy. A core value of the group is peer learning, enabling exchanges to share experiences, challenges, and solutions through structured engagement facilitated by the UN SSE Secretariat.

To increase understanding of the Net Zero Exchange Group and encourage regional participation, FIAB hosted a dedicated webinar for its member exchanges outlining what it means to join, including the commitment process, reporting expectations, and practical benefits. The session highlighted how participation strengthens credibility, supports market alignment, and connects exchanges to a global community of climate leaders.

To further lower barriers to entry, FIAB translated the UN SSE Net Zero Target-Setting Guidance into Spanish, making this key resource more accessible to Latin American exchanges and stakeholders. The guidance provides a practical framework to help exchanges define targets, implement actions, and transparently report progress in line with global climate objectives.

“Achieving net zero is not only an environmental imperative, it is a critical economic and market decision,” UN SSE Academy Head Tiffany Grabski said in the FIAB webinar. “Through the Net Zero Exchange Group, exchanges are showing how they can lead by example, align their own operations, and support issuers and investors in the transition. Making the Net Zero Target-Setting Guidance available in Spanish is a key step in ensuring exchanges across Latin America have the tools they need to act with confidence and credibility.”

Building on Years of Regional Capacity-Building

The Net Zero Exchange Group collaboration builds on a long-standing partnership between the UN SSE and FIAB focused on strengthening sustainable finance capacity across the region. Over several years, FIAB has hosted nine UN SSE Academy workshops, reaching more than 1,500 market participants across its member markets. These workshops have provided practical education on sustainability and climate-related disclosures, as well as advancing gender equality in capital markets.

FIAB has also translated several UN SSE publications into Spanish to support broader adoption of international best practices, including guidance on sustainability-related financial disclosures, net zero target-setting, and gender equality in corporate leadership. These efforts have helped make UN SSE tools more accessible and relevant to Spanish-speaking markets.

Formalizing Continued Collaboration

This growing body of work is reinforced by the recent signing of a Letter of Understanding between the UN SSE and FIAB, which strengthens their ongoing collaboration on sustainable finance, climate action, and gender equality. The exchange of letters provides a framework for continued joint activities, including training, events, research, and the development of Spanish-language tools to support more transparent and resilient capital markets across Ibero-America.
